Where the name comes from
Galjoen Gat takes its name from Galjoen Street, the cottage's address inside Pearly Beach Resort. The resort streets are named alphabetically by southern-African fish species: Abalone, Baracuda, Carpenter, Dageraad, Elf, Forel, Galjoen, Harder, Inkvis, Jellievis, Kabeljou, Leervis, Makriel, Nautilus, and onward.
Galjoen happens to be the national fish of South Africa (Dichistius capensis), so the name carries a happy thematic fit. The cottage is a quiet self-catering base 200 metres from the beach, not a galjoen-fishing destination. “Gat” in this context is the Afrikaans word for a cosy hideaway, not a literal hole.

Frequently asked questions
- The nightly rate covers the full self-catering cottage, linen for all beds, use of the kitchen, lounge, and outdoor patio. The cottage has its own Wi-Fi. A light cleaning kit (broom, mop, surface spray) is provided. Towels are not included, so bring your own bath and beach towels. Check the LekkeSlaap listing for the current rate and any additional charges that apply for your dates.
- Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is by 10:00. If you need a late check-in past 19:00 or an early check-out before 10:00, WhatsApp Mia in advance and we will arrange it where the cleaning schedule allows. Late check-in by arrangement carries no extra fee.
- Parking at the cottage fits 2 cars and 1 small trailer. That is enough for a couple plus a fishing boat or a small caravan. WhatsApp Mia ahead of arrival if you are towing something larger so we can confirm the layout works.
- The cottage has its own Wi-Fi router; there is no shared resort or estate Wi-Fi. It runs on a domestic line, so speeds vary through the day. For video calls and remote work it functions well during quieter periods; do not plan on large cloud syncs or 4K streaming. Mobile data via MTN or Vodacom is a practical backup if you need a guaranteed fast connection. We will be honest about the speed; ask Mia for the latest measurement if you have a specific work-from-cottage need.
- Yes, the cottage has an indoor braai that runs on wood or charcoal. Bring your own fuel. The Pearly Beach Mini Supermarket in the village usually stocks wood and is generally open until 9pm, and the Spar in Gansbaai sells a cleaner, low-smoke wood if you want to stock up on the way in.
- Linen yes, towels no. Bring your own towels for both swim and bath use. The cottage provides bedding, pillowcases, and bath mats. If you forget towels, the village shop on the resort, Pearly Beach Market, usually has a small selection; for more choice, Gansbaai is about 20 minutes away.
- A TV is available at the cottage. DStv is not connected, so bring your own decoder if you prefer DStv content. Free-to-air channels are available without extra equipment. Evenings at Pearly Beach are generally well spent on the patio or at the beach rather than in front of a screen, but the option is there if you need it.
- Yes. The cottage sleeps up to five guests across two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed. The second bedroom has a double bed and a three-quarter bed, giving a flexible arrangement for children or adults. The exact bedroom configuration should be confirmed with the host before booking, as the setup may be adjusted seasonally. Multiple families with children have reviewed the cottage on LekkeSlaap with positive feedback on the layout and the beach access for kids.
